Musculoskeletal Ultrasound involving therapeutic injection There are many reasons why a doctor, physiotherapist or Specialist may request that you have a Musculoskeletal ultrasound. The scan is ideal for showing the tendons, bursae and ligaments in some areas of the body. The most common area is the shoulder but ultrasound is also useful in looking at elbows, ankles and hips. Depending upon what the scan shows it may be of benefit to carry out a therapeutic injection of hydrocortisone. This is something that is offered by the Radiologist if he/she believes that you will benefit from it. The injection itself is done by the Radiologist using the ultrasound scanner to guide him/her. You may experience some residual discomfort at the injection site for a few hours afterwards. The possibility of this will be discussed with you prior to any injection being carried out. Usually a mild painkiller is enough to settle the discomfort.

After the scan After making payment at reception you will (in most instances) be provided with a CD containing your scan images. This CD is for YOUR RECORDS. A typed report will be sent to the person that referred you for your scan. This normally occurs within 24 hours but it is often sooner, dependent upon how the referrer prefers to receive their reports. However, if your scan was done urgently a radiologist can make contact directly with the person that referred you to pass on a preliminary report of the findings.
